“You’re So Lucky” — But Is It Really Luck?

July 28, 2025

“You’re so lucky!” It’s a phrase we’ve all heard—and probably said ourselves. Often, it’s meant as a compliment, or an expression of admiration:

“You’re so lucky you could take that trip.”

“You’re so lucky you could retire early.”

“You’re so lucky your kids turned out that way.”

“You’re so lucky you don’t have to worry about money.”

But here’s the thing: most of the time, luck has very little to do with it. What looks like luck is often the result of years—sometimes decades—of deliberate effort, intentional choices, trade-offs, and sacrifices. It’s the product of staying the course, even when it wasn’t easy or glamorous or fun.

Luck Is Rare. Discipline Is Common

In our work at One Financial Services, we’re privileged to see behind the curtain. We see the couple who took the modest vacation for 25 years so they could one day take the dream trip.

We see the business owner who lived lean for a decade before the rewards arrived. We see the family who prioritized savings over status. We see the parents who invested in values, not just portfolios. They didn’t rely on luck. They relied on discipline.

Those people made financial decisions that felt small in the moment—but added up to something big. And because of that, they now get to enjoy moments that look like “luck” to the outside world.

When Luck Plays a Role

That’s not to say luck never enters the picture. Of course it does.

Being born into a stable, supportive household? Lucky.

Good health? Lucky.

Meeting a mentor at the right time? Lucky.

Avoiding a major job loss or crisis? Sometimes, lucky.

But even where luck plays a role, it’s rarely the whole story. At One Financial Services, we see people squander good fortune all the time. And we see others take difficult beginnings and build something remarkable through sheer persistence and smart decision-making. Planning doesn’t eliminate the role of luck—it just makes you less dependent on it.

The Quiet Work Behind the Scenes

What most people don’t see or appreciate is the work behind the scenes:

The Sunday nights spent reviewing budgets instead of watching TV.

The spreadsheet that kept priorities in check.

The 401(k) contribution that was automatic—and undisturbed.

The conversations with a financial advisor that reframed what “enough” really means.

That’s not luck. That’s intention. And in a world obsessed with instant gratification, those choices don’t get nearly the credit they deserve.

Reframing the Compliment

The next time you feel the urge to say, “You’re so lucky,” consider saying this instead:

You’ve worked hard to be in that position.

I admire the way you’ve planned for your life.

You earned that.

Because people who reach a place of financial confidence have usually done more than we know to get there.

At One Financial Services…

We help people design the kind of lives that are easy to admire, and harder to dismiss as “lucky.” We work alongside them through the hard decisions, the trade-offs, the quiet victories that don’t make headlines but matter deeply.

And when the dream trip, the early retirement, or the meaningful gift to a loved one finally happens, we know what went into it. And we call it what it is: earned.

What does earned freedom look like to you? Each one of us has our own unique dreams/hopes/wishes for the future. To make them come true requires a plan. At One Financial Services, we are here to help create that plan and stay with you every step of the way.
