The Wisest Investment of All

December 26, 2024

Most of us have heard the saying, “Health is wealth”. It’s a common phrase because it is true…in so many ways. It won’t matter how much wealth you have if you don’t feel well enough to enjoy or share it.

As we are about to begin a New Year, when many of us go through the mental exercise of making resolutions, the One Financial Services team hopes you will take this opportunity to plan to make your health a priority in the coming year.

If you find the thought of a healthy lifestyle unappealing, after all, working out at a gym instead of sitting on a couch watching TV, or downing a salad instead of eating a hamburger, you might find more of an incentive by realizing all the benefits such a lifestyle can offer.

And then there’s the financial incentive; being healthy not only makes you feel good, it may benefit you financially. One study found a steep increase in annual medical expenditures for individuals whose Body Mass Index was above 30.

Here are a few ways your health habits might be affecting your bottom line:

Have regular medical checkups & preventative care. Better to catch a problem early while it’s easily treatable than to wait until the condition may require major intervention like a hospital stay and specialty medical equipment.

Have regular dental checkups & preventative care. Dental health is vital beyond just maintaining a healthy smile. Poor oral health can lead to a range of systemic issues, impacting your heart, lungs, and even your mental health.

Resolve to break bad habits. Smoking, for example, can be expensive in itself. Saving the money spent on cigarettes in a year would benefit you and your family far more, and you won’t be paying higher premiums for health and life insurance.

Maintain a normal weight. Obesity is expensive. The average overweight adult in America spends $1,861 more per year on healthcare than someone within a healthy weight range. Start slow; go for a daily walk, skip dessert.

Look to the future. Keep your long-term goal in mind. The healthier you are, the more you’ll be able to achieve both in your career and personal life. The quality of your time with your loved ones is as important as the quantity of time.

Your One Financial Services team values the trust you have placed in us. We wish you the happiest and healthiest New Year ahead. We look forward to serving you in 2025.
