Memorial Day reminds us of the sacrifices that have been made to keep us safe and provide the freedom we all enjoy. It is a time to honor our military and thank them for their service. It is also the traditional start to summer: School is almost out, days are long, the nights are warm, families gather for picnics and barbeques.
The One Financial Services family has started our own tradition in honor of US service members, and one service member in particular. In March of 2018, we awarded the first annual Bernie McElwain - One Financial Services Scholarship to a woman veteran student through Kutztown University’s Office of Veteran’s Services.
This scholarship was created to honor the father, and WW II veteran, of our Co-founder, Mary Nothelfer. Mary credits her father and his work ethic for helping to raise her to be a woman of substance. “I was always glad to be known as Bernie’s daughter”.
And we think Bernie would approve of our choice for the inaugural award of the scholarship bearing his name.
Victoria Hernandez, is “incredibly proud” of being a Marine. Like many others who undergo the rigors of Marine training, she says there were times she questioned her decision to enlist. But she wouldn’t trade the friendships, camaraderie, or the training for anything.
That training taught her to be an aviation electrician, but she quickly showed a talent for organizing systems and the accompanying paperwork. Before long, she was running her own projects.
Now a full-time student, Victoria, is majoring in finance and accounting, a perfect fit for the six month internship with One Financial Services, which accompanies the one thousand dollar scholarship award.
The One Financial Services family looks forward to welcoming Victoria to the firm this fall.
We are proud of the values we represent of honesty, trust, and personal service to your family. We look forward to continuing to work with you ensure their future.
